How does the Journals search work?

The Journals search form allows you to precisely search the journal content contained in History Study Center. In addition to the main history journal content, you can search for articles individually selected from other sources.

To conduct a search, type your search terms (individual words or phrases) into the keyword search box. Optionally, you may limit your keyword search to citations and abstracts or narrow the search by article title, article author, journal title and date of publication. Additionally, you can exclude book reviews from your search or restrict your search to book reviews only.

Any records containing the words you typed will be displayed on the Results page.

Note: In the search box, all terms are treated by default as if they were combined using the Boolean operator AND. Certain common words and symbols such as a, an, he, if etc. are excluded from searches; searches on words such as these are likely to take a long time and produce a large number of possibly irrelevant matches. These words are known as stopwords; you can view a complete list of stopwords here.

How do I use select from a list?

You can use the select from a list feature to browse all of the titles indexed in the Journal title search field. This can be helpful if you want to check the correct form to use for a journal title or see what titles are available.

To browse a list of titles, click on the select from a list link next the Journal title field. Click the relevant checkboxes to make a selection and click Select to transfer them back to the search form.

Note that you can use the Clear selections button to deselect all existing selections.

How can I get a more precise search result?

The Journals search form allows you to restrict or expand the search by using Boolean and proximity operators, expand the search to include related meanings and alternative spellings, or search for variations on search terms using truncation, and specify exact matching. Please see the Search Tips help page for more information on complex searching.

How do I search by date of publication?

Use the date of publication field to limit your Search to articles published in a single month or a range of months/years. The default values appearing in the search boxes are the earliest publication date in the journals dataset and the current year.

The Date of Publication field can be searched in two ways. To search on a range of months/years, choose the relevant months from the From and To dropdown boxes and enter the relevant year values into the From and To text boxes. For example:

Date of Publication search field showing different values in the year input boxes

To search within a single month, enter the same month/year in the From and To boxes. For example:

Date of Publication search field showing same values in the month/year input boxes

How do I browse Journals?

You can use the Browse Journals feature below the search form to navigate to journal articles using the table of contents for each journal issue. Click the Browse link to view a list of journal titles on the Browse Journals page.

Note: the Browse Journals feature only lists the main journals selected for inclusion in History Study Center. It is not possible to browse to articles which are individually selected from other sources.
