Results for multiple content types

The combined Results page displays the results of a search across more than one content type when you use the Quick or Advanced Search. A summary of your search terms and the total number of results found is shown at the top of the page.

Results are grouped into sections by content type: Study Units, Historical Documents, Maps & Reference, Multimedia, Journals. By default, History Study Center searches all content types when you use the Quick or Advanced Search. Use the links at the top of the page to jump to the relevant section.

A maximum of five (5) matches will appear in each section of the Search Results. If there are more than 5, you can click the the relevant more... link. A dedicated Results page will appear, containing all results (or access to all results) for that content type. A maximum of 1000 records will be returned for each content type.

Results for individual content types

If you have searched within a single content type or used one of the individual content type searches a page showing the first 50 results is displayed.

Use the page number system displayed below the returned results to see more results beyond the first 50.

If the number of pages of results exceeds 10, click the Next link to view page 11 upwards, and so on. On subsequent pages, the Previous link will display the links for the previous pages.

Note: if you selected a single type of content to search within, you will be taken to the dedicated Results page for that content type. If you searched on multiple categories, but only retrieved matches in a single category, the combined Results page will load.

What does each search result show?

From the Search Results page you can view the full text/record of an item, or access other functions in History Study Center.

Each search result shows the title linked to the item and brief bibliographic information or a brief description (journal articles also contain links to other formats where available; Web links include a direct link to the relevant Web page).

Click on a linked title to view an item. For video clips within the multimedia section, this will open a new page where you can choose between media formats. For Web links this will open a new page which includes a url linking to the relevant Web page. For items only available in pdf format this will open a new page which includes a link to the pdf document.

How do I save my search to My Archive?

You can save your search to My Archive to run again at a later date. To do this click the Save Search in My Archive link in the options bar below the page title. You will be asked to name your search and it will then be saved to My Archive.

Note: My Archive stores the search terms not the results so when you run the search from My Archive again it may not retrieve exactly the same results as your original search.
