What is displayed on Study Unit pages?

Study Unit pages are divided into the following sections: Timeline, Topic Overviews, Reference, Biographies, Historiography, Maps, Primary sources, Images, Video, Journal articles, Web links, Document Based Questions and Related Study Units . Not all of the Study Unit pages will include all of these sections.

Each Study Unit page starts with an introduction giving you some background information to the study area, and underneath it a Highlights section which picks out the key items of interest on the subject. These items are also highlighted in a blue box where they appear listed under their section headings. To navigate around a Study Unit page, click on a heading in the Jump to menu at the top of the page to jump straight to that section. To jump back to the top of the page, click the 'Back to top' link at the bottom of each section.

To view any item on a Study Unit page, click a link under one of the section headings. For further help on using the items accessed from a Study Unit page, see the full record page for the relevant resource type:

In addition, the Primary sources section may contain links to items individually selected for the Study Unit from other sources or databases e.g. Digital National Security Archives. These are displayed separately on a Study Unit item page.

To return to the Study Unit page after looking at an item, click the 'Back to Study Unit' link at the top of the page, or use the back option on your Web browser. There may be cross-reference links within a reference work, biography or historiography.

What does the coloured text on the Study Unit page mean?

When you submit a search, the returned results use a hit highlighting feature to show you the exact words within the Full text of an item that satisfy your search. The words making up the 'hit' are emphasised in red.

Hit highlighting will pick up words that have an associated meaning to your search terms.

Depending on where you have accessed the Study Unit from, there will be a link back to the previous page.

Previous/Next links

Use these links to view the previous or next item in the results list.
Note: this only applies if you have accessed the full record by carrying out a search.

Durable URL

View the durable URL for the page by clicking on this link. A popup will open, from which you can copy and paste the URL.

Print view

Open a version of the Full Text with all graphical elements and navigation stripped out ready for printing.

Save to My Archive

Store the current record in the Saved Records area of My Archive and come back to it at a later date by clicking the Save to My Archive link.

Cite this

Generates a citation for the current item and displays it on a new page.

How does Adobe Acrobat work?

Some of the links in History Study Center are to documents in Adobe PDF format. So when you click such a link, History Study Center will launch the version of Adobe Acrobat you have installed on your computer and display the document in a new window.

The Adobe Acrobat toolbar will be displayed at the top of the window, allowing you to print, save and zoom in and out of the document, as well as moving around the document by using the 'hand' tool. You can hold your mouse over each icon on the toolbar to display the explanatory tool-tip.

If you experience any problems either with the download or functionality of Adobe Acrobat, first ensure that you have the latest version of Acrobat Reader installed. Click here to see the current version and compare this to the properties of your current Reader.
